Wayzata is derived from a Lakota Sioux phrase meaning North Shore. The city is located in the North East corner of Lake Minnetonka. Wayzata's history is deep being one of the oldest cities on the lake. It was originally inhabited by the Dakota Indians, transferred ownership to Spain and then France, and was eventually sold to the United States of America from France in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase.
By 1855, Wayzata had an influx of new residents and they built a sawmill, hotel and a blacksmith shop. The early development of both retail and the railroad being extended from Minneapolis to Wayzata made it a popular tourist destination and the rest is history.
Wayzata has its own Police Department, Fire Department, Post Office and City Hall. The multiple fire and police stations help ensure a quick response time. Over the past few years, the rate of crime has decreased by over 40%. The overall crime rate for the city of Wayzata is 33% lower than the national average making it a safe and secure place to call home.
Wayzata, with its booming downtown area, has the most robust retail and restaurant scene out of any other Lake community.
